Intermittent gardening and a chance of sun

Thank goodness our garden still looks beautiful in the rain. We had a glorious weekend and worked like trojans in the garden then it has rained basically ever since.
When we lived in Murrumbateman, just north of Canberra, we would get down on our knees and thank the god of gardens whenever it rained. I think she must live in north Tassie because she certainly works overtime here. It is wetter here than usual - Blame it on the La Nina (sung to the tune of The Bossa Nova) but the garden always looks lush this time of the year. The only difference this year is the river running through the middle of the property!

Bird life that hasn't been so welcome this week is the heron that has just discovered our fish pond - just like it own personal fast food drive through. We've only lost one fish but I'll be getting back in the pond to put in some more under water bunkers for the fish to hide in.

The pond is also alive with frogs - quite deafening at times - and we have at least 3 colonies of frog spawn. We are waiting to see some movement but we also know many of the tadpoles will become fish food. Ah the magic of the web of life!

Our grasslands are now planted out and the mulch is spread. I love it how as soon as we work on a part of the garden the birds are down, looking for bugs and other delicacies. We were watched by two kookaburras who took up residence on the fence posts, just like the garden sentinels.
The chooks are laying, the ducks aren't. One particular chook takes umbrage whenever we collect the eggs. I tell her that there are no roosters, so no babies, but she doesn't listen. They accept that we feed them and give them fresh water but they have absolutely no interest in being friends. I blame the ducks. We've had them for nearly 7 years and they still run away from us as if we are planning a duck dinner. I'm sure they've warned the chooks off.
We are looking forward to less rain next week and we will don our scuba gear and work in the garden. We are hoping for a bonfire (ha!ha!) and will get the veggies in. I hope they take advice from our magnificent self seeded snow pea!
STOP PRESS! It has stopped raining!
